May 12 1958. 1615 hrs. Quarters, Engine Company 58, 2500 Allequippa St.

Firefighter John 'Jack' P. Counahan failed to show up for afternoon roll call. Counahan was a good man and had a good record in the Fire Bureau. It was unlike him to miss roll call.

Following the roll call, the day shift crew started filtering out of the firehouse, and then two men ran back inside. “Jack is out on the sidewalk!” they shouted.

All the men ran outside and there was Counahan, lying on the sidewalk near his car, bleeding from a head wound and unconscious.

A Police wagon was called and Counahan was taken to Presbyterian Hospital.

He never regained consciousness and died five hours later at 2015 hrs.

The official cause of death was a Cerebral hemorrhage due to a contusion on the left side of his head.

The was no sign of foul play and it was suspected that Mr. Counahan simply fell and hit his head.

John Counahan was 39 years old. He was a WWII veteran and had been on the job for 10 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and was survived by one sister and three brothers.

Rest in Peace Jack, you are not forgotten Brother.

This is from retired BC Jim Byrnes: "The chief is Charles Louge, the firefighter is Carl Grissom, the others did not graduate with the class. Chief Louge was acting deputy that day."

Okay here are some hints: there are three guys in this class who are not pictured. The fourth guy is pictured but unknown. These are the names, Ron Garland, Joe King, Carl Grissom, and Larry Harris.

Was the guy in the back row Stu?

I think that's the class of June or July 1974

I think the chief, second from left is chief Keller. I can’t remember the black guys name in the top row.

I remember Carl now. Wick, second from left in first row is deceased.
